Superworms, mealworms and giant mealworms look somewhat similar, and are sometimes mistaken for each other. Here are pictures of each, including full names. Superworms (zophobas morio) are the most preferable feeder insect because they contain the least chitin (hard exoskeleton). Unlike varieties of mealworms, superworms are shiny and display darker bands. Giant mealworms, which are thought to be a hormonally induced larger version of mealworms, contain the most chitin and should be avoided entirely as a feeder insect choice. These worms look much like their smaller counterparts. Mealworms are okay to feed occasionally, but do contain a good deal of chitin. Read molted worms for more information on how to deal with chitin content. Giant mealworms are often refrigerated along with mealworms at pet stores. Superworms cannot be refrigerated.
